A Look At Goal Setting Basics

What I wanted to do today was go back and look at some goal setting basics, and see how you can apply them in your every-day life.

While most people’s primary motivation in setting goals is to help them in a business or work situation, the real benefit of goal setting comes when you apply it to all aspects of your life.

What are goals? I came across a description I liked from Etta Mae Westbrook:

Goals state what you want to do or achieve. Goals will give direction to your life. Financial goals will help you to determine where your money will go.

Goals should be an extension of your values. If the goals are not related to your beliefs about what is important and good in life, the possibility of your achieving the goals is unlikely. If you do achieve a goal not related to the values you hold, you will probably feel unrewarded and dissatisfied.

Goals need to be specific.   A goal such as ”I want to have lots of money in the bank”, has very little meaning. Is “lots of money” $10,000 or $100,000? When will you know that you have  “lots of money?” Write each goal in specific terms. Write the goal in terms you can measure.

You may have heard it many times, but it still holds true : goals should be SMART : Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Setting goals that are realistic is a very important factor in achieving them. If you start from nothing, and set a goal of earning 2 million dollars next year, that is extremely unlikely to happen, and you may well loose faith in the value of goal setting.

Setting realistic goals allows you to taste success, and that success will breed more success. The goals shouldn’t be so realistic that they’re easy, though. There should be an element of difficulty, forcing you to stretch beyond what you normally would do.

There are many more areas to consider when setting goals, and I plan to cover some of these in the future.  Remember, goal setting can benefit you in all areas of your life, so take some time to learn how to get the maximum benefit out of the process.

  1. I agree with you wholeheartedly. Goals should be set in
every aspect of life as they help you to focus on how you
would like to live your life. Not only on money and business.

  3. Hi Alan
I’m a big beiever in setting goals.I think the best plan is to start with the overall goal (work from home full time in 2 years), And then break that down into smaller goals (being doing this in 1 year, 6 months 3 months etc.)

    Thanks for the info

  4. Goals are vital Alan. No goals is like wandering lost. The very first article I ever posted to my blog was on goals. Goals are dreams with a date attached.

Never get enough articles on goals and self-improvement.

    Good job

  6. Thanks for your comments everyone.

The area of goal setting is often talked about, but most people never really take it seriously enough to totally commit to it.
