Starting Your Goal Setting Plan

When considering goal setting basics, the initial step should be to think carefully about what you would like to achieve in the future.  The idea of setting lifetime goals can give a tremendous overall perspective, opening up other areas of your decision making process, and setting a framework for more short-term planning as well.

Break down your goal setting into several categories, as this helps give a balanced approach to all important areas of your life.

 Family

Education

Financial

Physical

Artistic

Career

Attitude

Pleasure

Service

Once you have decided your goals in these categories, you will need to give a priority to them if you want to be successful.

Over time review your goals, re-prioritize them until you are satisfied that they are an accurate reflection of the shape of the life that you want to lead.

Also, you will need to be careful that the goals that you have set are the goals that you personally want to achieve, and not what your parents, spouse, family, or employers want them to be.

More Goal Setting Basics

Many of you will have read my recent post on goal setting basics. It is a topic I have a big interest in, and the subject of a seminar we are hosting next Wednesday November 5th.

It is in Dublin, Ireland, and is hosted by Rachel Doherty, well known for her training seminars and motivational talks.

Goal setting is a powerful process for thinking about your ideal
future, and for motivating yourself to turn this vision of the future
into reality.

Goal setting techniques are used by top-level athletes, successful
business-people and achievers in all fields. They give you long-term
vision and short-term motivation. They focus your acquisition of
knowledge and help you to organize your time and your resources so
that you can make the very most of your life.

By setting sharp, clearly defined goals, you can measure and take
pride in the achievement of those goals. You can see forward progress
in what might previously have seemed a long pointless grind. By
setting goals, you will also raise your self-confidence, as you
recognize your ability and competence in achieving the goals that you
have set.

Join us at this life changing event on the 5th November Maldron Hotel
Parnell Square, Dublin, Ireland 6:30pm, Entry is €10

Customer Service In A Work From Home Online Business

Like any business, an online work from home one needs to develop a good relationship with customers, to ensure the long-term success of the enterprise.

By offering excellent customer service, you can compete with, and out-perform the more established players in the market. In today’s economic slowdown, this is especially important.

Many business owners spend a large amount of time and money attracting new clients and customers. Most, however,  neglect the area of follow-up, and keeping their existing  customers happy and willing to return.

This is crucial, as loyal customers can do an excellent job of “referral marketing”, often providing far greater results than those paid for with hard-earned dollars.

Rewarding loyal customers in some way is a great way to keep them happy. One way would be to alert them to an up-coming sale or promotion offered by your online home business before the general public, giving them the chance to benefit from your offer early.

An area often over-looked in the work from home online business market is getting feedback from your existing customers. Generally, you will be aware of the feelings of two types of customer; those who are wildly enthusiastic about what you do, and those who are strongly unhappy with your services.

Perhaps fortunately, these will only account for a small percentage of the people you deal with, meaning that you have no idea how most of your customers view your home business.

If you can tap into this valuable pool of information, any business you run will recieve an enormous boost. In an online work from home business, you will put yourself ahead of 90% of your competitors, and boost your success ratio enormously.

Is A Home Based Web Business A Good Idea?

If you are looking at starting a web based home business, it is important to do careful research before taking the plunge.

To get a successful  home based web business going, you will need a web site of your own, and to have a good idea on how best to market it. Knowing how to build a website is an important skill to develop, as it can save you a lot of money you would otherwise spend on having someone else customize your site.

Join some internet marketing forums, and learn from people who have already experienced success in a web business. Be careful, however, not to take advice from people who are no more experienced than you, but still offer their opinion as fact.

Don’t buy everything you come across online. Keep your credit card firmly under control until you fully understand what you are looking at.

Ultimately, you will only know if a home based web business is right for you by getting started in one. Once you have done your research, make the decision to give it your full effort, work hard, and take the advice of mentors who can help you.

A Look At Goal Setting Basics

What I wanted to do today was go back and look at some goal setting basics, and see how you can apply them in your every-day life.

While most people’s primary motivation in setting goals is to help them in a business or work situation, the real benefit of goal setting comes when you apply it to all aspects of your life.

What are goals? I came across a description I liked from Etta Mae Westbrook:

Goals state what you want to do or achieve. Goals will give direction to your life. Financial goals will help you to determine where your money will go.

Goals should be an extension of your values. If the goals are not related to your beliefs about what is important and good in life, the possibility of your achieving the goals is unlikely. If you do achieve a goal not related to the values you hold, you will probably feel unrewarded and dissatisfied.

Goals need to be specific.   A goal such as ”I want to have lots of money in the bank”, has very little meaning. Is “lots of money” $10,000 or $100,000? When will you know that you have  “lots of money?” Write each goal in specific terms. Write the goal in terms you can measure.

You may have heard it many times, but it still holds true : goals should be SMART : Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Setting goals that are realistic is a very important factor in achieving them. If you start from nothing, and set a goal of earning 2 million dollars next year, that is extremely unlikely to happen, and you may well loose faith in the value of goal setting.

Setting realistic goals allows you to taste success, and that success will breed more success. The goals shouldn’t be so realistic that they’re easy, though. There should be an element of difficulty, forcing you to stretch beyond what you normally would do.

There are many more areas to consider when setting goals, and I plan to cover some of these in the future.  Remember, goal setting can benefit you in all areas of your life, so take some time to learn how to get the maximum benefit out of the process.

How Article Submission Can Work For You

Why is article submission becoming so popular as a means of boosting business online?

Well, here are some reasons for this trend.

It is very effective.   Sending articles to different article directories helps to create back-links to your website.  As the number of people reading your articles grows, your chances of increasing traffic grows too.

You have no risk.   No matter how good or bad your initial efforts are, you can always improve, and fine tune things as you go along.

Low cost.  As submitting to directories is almost free, once you begin your article submission program, you will start to see visitors to your website with minimum investment costs.

Quick return on investment.   With article submission, you get to see results very soon. Get your campaign of article submission going as soon as you can, and you will start to see results almost immediately.

You can use article submission tools like Submit Your Article to assit you to submit your articles to article directories, instead of doing it manually, which can be very tedious. This make your job easier to submit your articles to many of directories, and at the same time help to expose your articles on the internet and increase traffic to your site.

What’s Your Legacy?

Imagine being described as a “great humble giant”, “a generous but modest philanthropist”, “an American icon, philanthropist and champion for children” and having “selfless humility and generosity”.

These were some of the tributes paid to the late Paul Newman.

To have such a consistent message delivered, Paul Newman must have identified what he wanted to contribute to society early on and just kept doing it.  He had a clear vision.

Do you know what you want your legacy to be? Is it about leaving a tangible reminder, having discovered or solved something, been a successful business person? Or the intangible of having been a great friend, supported people through difficult times or inspired?

What words match your values, that you would like to see in your obituary? Kevin Spacey creates a great oxymoron of Newman when he describes him as a “great humble giant” – which paints a fantastic image of a powerful man who is down to earth.

Ensure your values and vision are complementary but they don’t need be boring. Get creative and evolve a vision that you are excited about, will challenge you and that you will be proud to look back on.

His daughter Lissy spoke about honouring his memory by doing things for other people & looking out for one another. Some of the examples she gave were simple (we don’t all need to start Hole in the Wall camps for children or set up a line of sauces); bring soup to a friend, donate money or vote were some of her suggestions.

Also look local – who needs help now? Is there a charity event which would benefit from your expertise, is there a programme to teach computers to the elderly, a charity shop who needs volunteers or how about becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister?

  • What do you want your legacy to be?
  • Specifically what words do you want in your obituary?
  • How are you living that today?
  • What else can you do you live your vision?
  • What can you do for others?

Remember, what you do today will reflect where you are in 5 years time, so make it worthwhile.

Home Based Business Scams To Avoid

Scams in the home based business niche have been around for many years, but many now use the ever growing reach of email and the internet to get target more victims. We have all seen those spam emails and classified ads that try to sell us the lifestyle of our dreams.  For just a small investment and a little of our time, we can have it all. Most of these are rubbish, but here are some very genuine ways of working at home.  The key is knowing how to spot and then avoid the scams.

You know that feeling you get - “this sounds too good to be true”?  Well, that gut instinct is usually right.
Often, home business scams share some common characteristics,  such as their promises of large profits for very little effort and in a very short period of  time; claims like “it’s so easy you’ll be up and running in no time”, “no experience required”, and the like. Often the promo material has testimonials from fictitious individuals and that favourite ploy, “We can only fully let you in on this excellent home business opportunity after you register, oh by the way, the price goes up tomorrow”.

Some really old scams are still around, and they are still catching out innocent  people looking for a break in life. Be extremely cautious of work at home plans such as:

Assembly Work at Home - A real classic this one. Spend some money on materials to assemble into gift items or toys with great profits on selling the now completed pieces back to the promoter, after all he’s paying for your assembly work. Unfortunately, the promoter says your work is not up to their standards, and won’t pay for the assembled toys. Now you’re left with a bunch of stuff that nobody really wants, and there is no way to get your money back.

Medical Claims Processing - You’ll hear that many medical practices need help to process their claims work, and for just a little cash right now (there it is again…) you can buy the software which does all that processing and allows you to offer your freelance processing service. Why you’re now a ‘certified’ claims expert with some fancy software, all you need is to get some medical practice to use your services. That’s when you find they are perfectly happy doing their own processing.

Envelope Stuffing - You’ll most likely find yourself deluged with offers of more work at home schemes all of which need just a little cash to get started right now! You’ll also get the detailed instructions on how to place ads about envelope stuffing and make money by performing the same scam on others!

Avoid these home based business scams like the plague and pay only when you know what you’re getting. Look for money back guarantees like those offered by Clickbank. The genuine home business promoters will tell you exactly what you’re paying for, and certainly there are some excellent guides to home businesses available there. Try them, I’ve only ever asked for one refund and that was on some faulty software.  The home business guides I’ve bought have been very informative and great value,  even if sometimes a little bit hyped.

Take the time to study any home based business opportunity you are interested in, and then go with one or two that you find are credible and legitimate.

Affiliate Marketing Tips

If you are new to affiliate marketing, then this post may well be of great interest to you. In it we will cover some good affiliate marketing tips, many of which are well known, and so it isn’t some magic solution. Often we need to hear things from other people to realize what we need to do to be successful. Above all, Work Hard!

Choose a topic you know.  It is best to start with an area you know well.  It is easy for you to build a site, and it’s a subject you know and are interested in. That means you can add your own personal touch and opinions to your site. If you try to build your first site from something in which you have no personal interest, the site soon becomes a painful and boring task. Stick with what you know initially and then grow from there.

Banners.     Keep glittery banners to a minimum on your webpages.  A site with pages of banners or rows banners stuffed under content, not only doesn’t a person want to click the banner; it also has the added bonus of making your site look pretty ugly.

Remember there is no “best” program.   Success with a program can vary from person to person, so be prepared to test several with an open mind, and see how they work out for you.

Use several providers in the same area. As suggested, select a merchant based on what you like, or better yet select a few. By offering three to four merchants on the same site, you give visitors to your pages a variety of opportunities to choose from. This will provide you with information on what your visitors want to see, and can give you important data on how well the different merchants perform against each other when put head to head.

Content Sites.  By visiting affiliate marketing forums you’ll hear people talk about “content sites.” These  provide potentially educational and topical content about the products they are promoting, or appear to promote products as a side focus. Content sites are easier to build when you know about the products you are promoting, or the merchant makes content available to you. However, remember that the goal of your site is to encourage visitors click off of your site and onto a merchant’s store. No click-through means no sale.

What are Data (Product Info) Sites. Data driven sites are generally limited to pure product data, prices, images, descriptions, there’s no illusion of education here. It’s all about promoting the product and making the visitor get off your site as fast as possible and onto the merchant’s store. Data driven sites generally require access to data feeds and some knowledge of programming.

Parasites and how they affect you. You will see a lot of sites that talk about “Parasites”, “ParasiteWare” and “ScumWare.” All of these are applications that can redirect, overwrite, or intercept your visitors (and therefore YOUR commission) and change your visitor into their visitor. The majority of these masquerade as shopping support software, file sharing applications, browser help objects (BHOs), and even hidden applications installed on a user’s PC via drive-by installs or in bundled software packages.

Designing your first Site. It will be a big help to know HTML and the ability to use graphics software. Good knowledge in these areas will give the ability to add small personal touches to your website. However, don’t be alarmed if you have no skills in these areas. It is not always necessary to be skilful as there are a number of tools and merchants around that can help you get your first site up and launched.  These tools are great for getting rolling but always remember to do some customization of anything you get automated to ensure it is uniqueness to you. Search engines and directories will remove duplicate content.

Getting a domain name.  It is best to get a top level domain (TLD) name and some cheap, but reliable, hosting. When chosing a domain name,  think about what you are going to promote, and then choose your domain name around it. Don’t buy the domain name first and then later think about what you’ll promote on the site.

Keep Working at it. While it is the ultimate aim of every affiliate partner not to have to do any work, the reality is, especially early on, there’s a lot of work to be done. Whether it’s in the site’s design, updates, education or reading stats, there is a lot to do. The pay-offs aren’t instant and it can take a fair few months before you’re even making enough to even cover your costs. It takes perseverance, dedication and patience to succeed, don’t quit if your first attempts don’t pay off.

Educate yourself. Education is an immensely important part of affiliate marketing. There is a heck of a lot to learn. Educating yourself on basic principles of HTML, programming, data feed manipulation, creating custom links, or learn how to identify a good niche in a way that others have overlooked. The affiliate forums are certainly one of the best places to start this education.

Take the next step. Once you have that first site up and it’s making money, then it’s time to start to expand. Using what you have learned by building that first site, move on to a new project. Leave the first site to keep making money, making adjustments, and any needed updates, but generally letting it do its thing. Your next site is likely to be a site in an area you’ve seen other affiliates having lots of success. It makes sense to follow the money, but remember it can be a crowded market place when everyone is after the same thing.  Be aware that often the most successful sites are those that target a very specialized niche, and focus strongly on that area until they have mastered it.

Is It A Good Time To Start A Home Based Business?

A couple of things got me thinking today, both centered around the idea to start a home based business.

First of all I was in the gym early this morning ( not my normal Tuesday routine but I was easing my conscience after an enjoyable weekend ), and I saw an ad on the TV.

It said there are two types of people in life, those who just think of starting a business, and those who actually do start one. Now, the ad was for a major bank, and it was selling business start-up loans.

I re-worded it slightly in my mind, to those who just think about starting a home based business, and those who actually do start one.  I wonder how many thousands of people every day think of getting their own home business going, but never take it any further.

Of course, with a home based business you can get started with very little overhead, and certainly without the need to approach your friendly bank manager for a loan.

The second thing that happened to me was that I went to fill my car with fuel this evening, and found a large line of cars waiting to be served. I got talking to one of the attendents, and joked was the oil running out.

He told me that the government here in Ireland was adding $0.45 extra duty per gallon of diesel and gasoline from midnight tonight, and adding a levy of between 1% and 2% on all income for everyone in the country.

Why? To pay for the very generous bail-out of our friends in the banking sector, the same people who were advertising for my business in the gym this morning.

Now, you may be thinking, I don’t live in Ireland, why would I care?  That would never happen in the US or elsewhere.

Well, with the election on at the moment, you can bet your bottom dollar that no politician will even suggest such a measure. But come the New Year, whoever wins is going to have to face up to the cost of sorting out the financial quagmire that has become obvious over the last few months.  And who will bear the burden? Yes you’ve got it, the ordinary guys and girls in your town.

So now more than ever it makes sense to start your own home business to help tide you over the uncertain economic times that seem inevitable. Having a second source of income really does give you security and piece of mind. Once the economy picks up again, as it will, you will be in a much stronger position to take advantage of opportunities that will arise in the future.

My own personal favourite way to get started in a business from home is with a business online.

Don’t leave it until the economy forces you to make cut-backs in your lifestyle, but build your income cushion to maintain and improve your financial situation over the next twelve months. You deserve it!
